ONE in seven drivers in Britain no longer has a clean driving licence, according to new research - with the number of drink drive convictions on the rise. A study of nearly 3.5 million drivers found that 14 per cent admitted having one or more convictions on their licences, up five per cent on two years ago. Despite the rise in convictions, the research reveals that speeding has actually fallen from 86 per cent of convictions in 2003 to 82 per cent in 2005. So-called "amber gamblers" - drivers who run red lights - make up the next largest group, representing five per cent of drivers with convictions, down 0.1 per cent on 2003.
Worryingly the number of drink drivers has almost doubled, growing from 2.3 per cent of drivers with convictions in 2003, to four per cent in 2005. Typically across the country drivers with one conviction would have seen an increase of up to seven per cent on their insurance, while motorists with multiple convictions will have seen dramatic insurance hikes up to 20 per cent for two convictions and almost 50 per cent for three convictions.
